Abstract

Background: Nausea, vomiting is the most complained symptom due to chemotherapy. Independent interventions that can be done by nurses in dealing with nausea and vomiting are nonpharmacological therapy, namely progressive muscle relaxation therapy. This exercise aims to induce relaxation so that physical and psychological disorders caused by chemotherapy are reduced, to achieve this goal the client must tense and relax several muscle groups and focus on the difference between tension and relaxation of the muscles. Purpose: The purpose of this scientific work is to apply nursing care and progressive muscle relaxation interventions in cancer patients who experience nausea and vomiting due to side effects of chemotherapy based on Evidenced Base. Method: Using a qualitative descriptive method with a case study approach. Results: The description of the assessment of the three patients included anamnese and physical examination using the observation method showed that the main complaint in all three patients was experiencing nausea and vomiting after chemotherapy. Nursing diagnoses that arise are hypovolemia, body image disorders effects of chemotherapy treatment, risk of electrolyte imbalance. The intervention and implementation were carried out by identifying the characteristics of vomiting, measuring the volume of vomiting, providing tissue to clean the mouth and nose, helping to bend the patient's body. nonpharmacological intervention to manage nausea and vomiting, namely progressive muscle relaxation. All nursing problems in all three patients were able to be overcome until the problem was partially resolved and completely resolved. Discussion: Progressive muscle relaxation decreases nausea and vomiting through a distraction mechanism and decreases CTZ sensitivity to vomiting. At the time of nausea, vomiting, sympathetic aurosal such as blood pressure, pulse, muscle spasm in the digestive tract will increase, with relaxation the distress will generally decrease so that the sensitivity of vomiting receptors in CTZ also decreases. Conclusion: Of the three cancer patients undergoing chemotherapy, nursing care was provided which consisted of assessment, enforcement of nursing diagnoses, planning, implementation and evaluation. The implications of progressive muscle relaxation show the results can reduce nausea and vomiting after 20 hours of intervention.
