Abstract

Chili pepper (Capsicum annuum L.) and leaf mustard (Brassica juncea L.) are vegetable commodities that are needed by the community and have high economic value. Planting with intercropping systems and the use of mulch are expected to increase income, influence and increase the diversity of entomophagous insect species and suppress phytophagous insect populations. This research aims to determine species diversity of phytophagous and entomophagous insects on chili pepper Intercropped with leaf mustard and mulching treatment as well as the production of intercropped plants. Phytophagous and entomophagous insects were sampled weekly starting from transplanting until harvesting using pitfall and pan traps. All insects obtained were identified based on their morphological characteristics. The results showed that mulching in intercropped chili and mustard reduced the presence of soil and air-inhabiting phytophagous and entomophagous insects. Total species of phytophagous and entomophagous insects trapped in intercropped chili and mustard without mulch, rice straw mulch and plastic mulch were 40, 49 and 54 species, respectively. The highest chili and mustard yield was obtained in chili-mustard intercropping with rice straw mulching (1.121 kg of chili fruit and 8.135 kg of mustard) and followed by plastic mulching (0.529 kg of chili fruit and 6.798 kg of mustard) and without mulch (0.446 kg of chili fruit and 6.582 kg of mustard).
