Abstract

Tooth extraction is the most feared action in dental treatment and can cause dental anxiety. Dental anxiety can affect the success of a dental treatment. Good interpersonal communication by a dentist can control a patient's dental anxiety during dental treatment. Objective: to find out the significance of the influence of dentist’s interpersonal communication on patient’s anxiety level of dental extraction at Dental and Oral Special Hospital of Palembang. Methods: This study was an observational analytic with a Longitudinal design (before and after measurement). The study involved 82 dental extraction patients at Dental and Oral Special Hospital of Palembang. The measurement of anxiety using the Index of Dental Anxiety and Fear (IDAF-4C+) questionnaire before and after the interpersonal communication of the dentist. Data were analyzed using the Wilcoxon Test. Results: There was a decrease in anxiety score of 0.64 and p value of 0,000 (p≤0.05) so that the research hypothesis is accepted. Conclusion: Dentist’s interpersonal communication has a significant effect on patient’s anxiety level of dental extraction at Dental and Oral Special Hospital of Palembang.
