Abstract
The prevalence of hypertension is high and tend to increase causes hypertension to be one of the big and serious problems. Based on Riskesdas 2013 hypertension is higher in urban areas, which is 26.1% compared to rural areas at 25.5%. The aim of this study was to analyze the relationship between psychosocial stress and the incidence of hypertension in rural and urban Indonesia. This research is a quantitative study using a cross sectional design. The data used are secondary data obtained from Indonesian Family Life Survey 5 (IFLS 5). This study used all subjects who met the inclusion criteria as many as 10,008 rural respondents and 16,057 urban respondents. Data is analyzed by Complex Sample in univariate, bivariate and multivariate, then data is presented in the form of tables and interpreted with narration. The results of bivariate analysis showed that in rural there was a relationship between psychosocial stress, age, sex, education status, employment status, marital status, body mass index, history of tobacco consumption and fat consumption with the incidence of hypertension. Whereas in urban, the results of bivariate analysis showed that there was a relationship between psychosocial stress, age, sex, education status, employment status, marital status, economic status, body mass index, history of tobacco consumption and fat consumption with the incidence of hypertension. In rural areas, psychosocial stress affects the incidence of hypertension after being controlled by variables of age, sex, educational status, economic status, marital status and body mass index (BMI) (PR= 1,108; 95% CI= 1,016-1,209)). Whereas, in urban, psychosocial stress affects the incidence of hypertension after being controlled by variables of age, sex, education status, economic status, marital status, body mass index (BMI) and history of tobacco consumption (PR= 1,174; 95% CI= 1,032-1,335). The results of multivariate analysis in rural and urban, psychosocial stress affect the incidence of hypertension. Suggestions in this study are the need for hypertension prevention and interventions are needed to deal with psychosocial stress events such as stress management techniques, relaxation and counseling related to psychosocial stress and hypertension.
