Abstract

Background. Osteoarthritis is one of the diseases that cause disability in elderly. One of the impairment caused by knee OA is decline of balance. The decline of balance control is one of the risk factors of falling in people with knee OA. Microwave Diathermy (MWD) and exercise therapy are modalities of physiotherapy that often used in knee osteoarthritis. Exercise therapy recommended by ACR guidelines for knee OA is quadriceps strengthening exercise. Therapy is meant to reduce impairment, protect the joints, increasing daily physical activity and preventing disability. Therefore, this study is conducted to determine the comparison of balance in elderly patients with knee osteoarthritis who received Microwave Diathermy (MWD) with and without quadriceps strengthening exercise at Medical Rehabilitation Installation RSUP Dr. Mohammad Hoesin Palembang Methods. This study used cross sectional approach. Data was collected by measuring the level of balance and fall risk by using the Berg Balance Scale (BBS) test. Results. From the 36 research subjects, it is showed that there was a significant difference between the BBS scores of knee OA patients who received MWD therapy with the scores of knee OA patients who received both MWD therapy and quadriceps strengthening exercise, p <0,05. Conclusion. There is a significant difference between level of balance of knee OA patients who received MWD therapy with knee OA patients who received both MWD therapy and quadriceps strengthening exercise.
