Abstract

This researct aims to determine the implementation of basic literacy by the Palembang City Literacy Community Friends (SLJ). This type of research uses qualitative research methods. The location of the researct was in Taman Dharma Wanita TVRI Palembang City. Informants from the study were 7 people, consisting of visited book-slapping activity. Data collection in this researct was done by observation, interview and documentation. For data analysis techniques, namely data collection, data reduction, data presentation and conclusion drawing. The results of this researct are: Community of Friends of Street Literacy (SLJ) continues to make efforts to increase the interest in reading the people of Palembang city by providing reading material facilities or can be called ‘‘street libraries ’’. Activities that they do in the form of books, picnic books, and book donations throughout Indonesia. Changes in attitudes and actions in children in the form of intensity of the presence of children in visiting activities carried out by SLJ. Children feel happy with book-slapping activity, so that makes children who are initially mediocre when invited to join in the activity of book-slapping have been interested for a long time because of seeing various kinds of picture books. A change in reading interest in children after participating in book-slapping activity can help in growing interest in reading for children who do not have a reading interest and can develop children who already have an interest in reading.
