Abstract

Worm infection is a chronic disease without causing obvious clinical symptoms and the impact can be seen in the long term. 28.12% of helminthiasis for the incidence of Soil Transmitted Helminths infection in Indonesia was recorded in 2017. The environment, water sources, bowel habits and personal hygiene are factors related to helminth infections. Child growth and development can be disrupted if the disease affects children. Quantitative research using cross sectional study design is the type of research used. The sampling method used is the Two stages cluster sampling method dan the stool sample inspection method uses the kato katz method. A total of 341 respondents from elementary school children grade 3, 4 and 5 were sampled. The questionnaire is an instrument used in this study. The analysis used is univariate, bivariate and multivariate. The results showed proportion of soil transmitted helminth infection was 5,7%. The variabel that significantly related to this incidence of helminthiasis was place to defecate with p-value: 0.001 (PR: 5,51, 95% CI: 2,015-15,048). There is no relationship between gender (p-value: 0.669), water sources (p-value: 0.157) and personal hygiene (p-value: 0.115) with helminthiasis but waters sources variable is confounding variables. The conclusion of this research was the variable of defecation is the dominant variable at risk of helminthiasis after controlled by variables of gender, water source and personal hygiene. Maintaining personal hygiene such as washing hands with soap before eating and after bowel movements and using a healthy and closed toilet or toilet for defecation is highly recommended so that bacteria or parasites in the stool do not pollute the environment.
