Abstract
Chisels are tools used in the machining process to cut workpieces. The tool can also determine the quality of the workpiece so that it affects the cutting force. The rake angle in the tool geometry can determine the result of the cutting force on the lathe machining. The cutting force can be determined by analytic, experiment and simulation. Simulations based on the 2D- finite element method for lathe machining (orthogonal cutting) benefit greatly from allowing very complex problems to be easily and efficiently modeled and simulated accurately. The shape of the elements in the finite element based simusation method is very diverse and determines the results of the cutting force in lathe method, so research purposes to find the best element shape with the results closer to the experiment and find the best rake angle to extend the tool life. The finite element method based simulation has a three-stage process. The first stage is Pre-Processor (compiling / importing the program), the second is Processor (checking data / running the program), and the third is Post-Processor (result of output data). The best form of the element in this analysis is a parallelogram with a slope of 45° where the cutting force results are closer to the experimental. Rake angel which produces the smallest cutting force is rake angel 20º.
