Abstract
Acidic waters are a common problem in the use of swamps for cultivation activities. Poor water and soil quality in swamp ponds can be caused by soil containing pyrite. Liming is one of the simplest and most effective method to increase pH in an aquatic body. Catfish is a freshwater fish that has been widely cultivated. This study aims to obtain the appropriate dosage of lime on pond soil with various depths of the pyrite layers to improve water quality so that it is optimum for the growth of catfish (Pangasius sp.) in swamps. This research has been conducted from July to November 2018 in the Laboratorium Kolam Percobaan, Aquaculture Study Program, Department of Fisheries. Water quality analysis was carried out at the Laboratorium Dasar Perikanan Aquaculture Study Program, Department of Fisheries, Sriwijaya University. The experimental design uses a Split Plot Design (SPD) with two treatment factors and three replications. The main factor is depth of pyrite layer from soil surface (P) with treatment levels of P1 (40-50 cm from the soil surface), P2 (30-40 cm from the soil surface), P3 (20-30 cm from the soil surface). The sub-plot factors are the dosage of lime (K) with treatment levels of K0 (control), K1 (2000 kg.ha-1 CaO equivalent), K2 (4000 kg.ha-1 CaO equivalent), K3 (6000 kg.ha-1 CaO equivalent), and K4 (8000 kg.ha-1 CaO equivalent). The total experimental unit was 45 ponds. The variables observed were water quality including pH, alkalinity, dissolved oxygen, ammonia, Fe-dissolved and dissolved sulfate. The results showed at a depth of 40-50 cm from the soil surface with dolomite lime dose of 2000 kg.ha-1 equivalent to CaO (P1K1), and at a depth of 30-40 cm pyrite from the soil surface with dolomite lime dose 4000 kg.ha-1 equivalent to CaO (P2K2) also at a depth of 20-30 cm pyrite from the soil surface with dolomite lime dose of 4000 kg.ha-1 equivalent to CaO (P3K2) is the best treatment that can be applied for maintenance of catfish in swamp land for 60 days.
