Abstract

This study aims to determine the relationship between the age of oil palm empty fresh fruit bunches as mulch on the growth and yield of oil palm (Elaeis guineensis Jacq.). Oil Palm that are sampled from marihat varieties are 20 years old. This research was conducted in Putak Village, Gelumbang District, Muara Enim Regency, South Sumatra Province from October 2019 to April 2020. The method used in this study was a Randomized Block Design (RBD) with seven levels of treatment. Each treatment was repeated ten plants. Total sample oil palm were 70 plants. Factors studied were the age of oil palm empty fresh fruit bunches (EFFB) as mulch, namely: P0 = 0 months without aplicated EFFB , P1 = 2 months EFFB (August 2019 application), P2 = 4 months EFFB (July 2019 application), P3 = 6 months EFFB ( May 2019 application), P4 = 8 months EFFB (March 2019 application), P5 = 10 months EFFB (January 2019 application), P6 = 12 months EFFB (November 2018 application). Data obtained from observations and measurements were analyzed using the analysis of variance (ANOVA) method. The results showed the age of EFFB correlated with mulch height shrinkage, decreased soil temperature, and increased increased soil water content and significantly affected the number of spear leaves, number of male flower bunches, and the number of female flower bunches. Giving oil palm empty fresh fruit bunches as mulch can reduce the number broken fronds and can increased the formation of oil palm fresh fruit bunches (FFB), and more weight of effect fruit bunches (FFB) in dry land.
