Abstract
The probability of a direct lightning strike on the structure, is relatively high for tropical regions such as Indonesia. This allows lightning strike on the transmission line, causing an overvoltage which causes a backflashover (BFO). Therefore, it is necessary to consider the lightning performance of the transmission line. This study observes the backflashover phenomenon with concentrated grounding systems to analyze the impact of grounding resistance, soil resitivity, impulse resistance, and the minimum lightning peak current that causes backflashover on the insulator string, and determine the estimated number of strokes on the transmission line (BFOR) for lightning performance. By using ATP-EMTP simulation, it was found that the higher ground resistance will result in a minimum backflashover current, will be smaller. And at T382 with R0 = 8.5 Ω which is the closest tower to the substation, the minimum backflashover current for phase-A is 41.3 kA, phase-B is 31.6 kA, and phase-C is 29.0 kA with IEC standard impulse. For BFOR phase-A approximately 0.364 strokes/100 km/year, for phaseB approximately 0.572 strokes/100 km/year and for phase-C is 0.629 strokes/100 km/year. So by modeling using ATP-EMTP, can estimate the lightning performance of a transmission line through the backflashover rate obtained.
