Abstract

Acraea terpsicore L. (Lepidoptera: Nymphalidae) is one of the butterflies that has the most distribution at Sriwijaya Indralaya University, and its larvae are found to be able to eat Piriqueta racemosa (Passifloraceae) host plants. The purpose of this study was to determine feeding behavior, life span and survival rate of A. terpsicore in P. racemosa plants. This research was conducted from January to February 2020 at the Butterfly House of the Department of Biology, Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences, Sriwijaya Indralaya University, South Sumatra. Research on longevity and feeding behavior stage larvae of A. terpsicore on P. racemosa host plants was carried out using descriptive methods and observations of feeding behavior using visual recording methods which included: morphological description of each stage, duration of development of each stage, and larval feeding behavior. The results feeding behavior of A. terpsicore larvae on the host P. racemosa varies greatly between instar, the highest frequency of eating occurs in the morning, and the lowest at night. Instar larvae 1 and 2 are aggregates with dominant food distribution patterns in certain plant parts that have soft texture. Whereas instar larvae 3, 4, and 5 will be solitary and spread over the parts of the P. racemosa plant. Larva body position when feeding dominant faces the direction of gravity. The results of long-life studies of A. terpsicore butterflies from eggs to imago last for 34 - 44 days with an average of 38.12 ± 2.34 days, with a survival rate of 40%.
