Abstract

Severe malnutrition is one of the nutrition problems in Indonesia and it happen to children under five years. Severe malnutrition cause negative effect for physical and mental growth, decrease the immunity, decrease IQ, disablement and increase the number of morbidity and mortality. World Health Organization (WHO) estimate that 54% of children death in the world causes by severe malnutrition. This study used a case control study design with a ratio 1: 2. used a total of 147 people samples were selected by simple random sampling, consisted of 49 under five years children as cases and 98 under five years children as control. Data analysis was done by univariate, bivariate, and multivariate using multiple logistic regression prediction model. The proportion of malnutrition was 49 children The results showed that there was a correlation between economic status, exclusive breastfeeding, mother’s employment, number of children in family, the way of mothering, mother’s education, infectious disease, health service utilization, latrines condition, waste of discharge water condition with severe malnutrition and there was no correlation between garbage dumps condition with severe malnutrition. The most dominant factor of severe malnutrition is the economic status variable with (OR: 4,634 95% CI :1,701– 12,632). factors affecting severe malnutrition are economic status, exclusive breastfeeding, mother’s employment, number of children in family, the way of mothering, mother’s education, infectious disease, health service utilization, latrines condition, waste of discharge water condition. Economic status is the most dominant variable affecting severe malnutrition after controlled by other variables. The need for an integrated and multisectoral programs to increase family income, maternal education, and exclusive breastfeeding for reducing the incidence of severe malnutrition.
