Abstract

Androgyny is a part of minority group that is still considered a deviance in Indonesia. As people identify gender based on appereance, androgyny is still becoming minority group compares to other groups in this country. This research was conducted to see how an androgynous individual, Jovi Adhiguna, represented his resistance against gender stereotypes through social media. This research used qualitative method with critical discourse analysis study of S. Jager and F. Maier that was used to analyze the contents on the Instagram account of Jovi Adhiguna. The data was taken from the account @joviadhiguna. This study used the theory of representation of Stuart Hall. The results showed that Jovi visualized his androgynous style as well as expressing his resistant against gender stereotypes in the form of critics which were revealed through Instagram contents. Some of his contents were very representative in which Jovi discussed the reality of androgyny which tended to be discriminated and created his identity as androgynous individual by being a fashion stylist. These representational efforts then resulted in the changes of people's attitudes and perspectives on him.
