Abstract

Flavonoid compounds contained in ethanol extract of purple sweet potato leaves in vitro have a strong antioxidant power with an IC50 value of 372.4 µg / ml. The purpose of this study was to determine the antioxidant effect of ethanol extract of purple sweet potato leaves in vivo using the TBARS method by measuring MDA levels in blood of male rats induced by carbon tetrachloride (CCl4), these measurements were based on the formation of MDA-TBA complex. This study used 30 male Wistar white rats divided into 6 groups, namely normal group (Na CMC 1%), negative (Na CMC 1%), positive (Vitamin C 1.98 mg / 200 gBB), and treatment 1 , 2 and 3 (ethanol extract of purple sweet potato leaves with dosages of 250,500 and 750 mg / kgBW) were given orally for 6 days and on the 7th day the rats were induced with CCl4 except the normal group. The results of the study using the TBARS method showed that extracts with a dose of 750 mg / kgBB and 500 mg / kgBB had antioxidant effects because they could reduce MDA levels in rat blood plasma by 1,862 ± 0.045 nmol / mL and 1902 ± 0.045 nmol / mL. Ethanol extract of purple sweet potato leaves which has the best antioxidant effect and antioxidant effect is a dose of 750 mg / kgBB because it has an antioxidant effect that is almost the same as vitamin C (1,866 ± 0.047 nmol / mL).
