Abstract

This research discussed about “The lifestyle of food, fun, and fashion (3f) on Sriwijaya University Palembang Campus’s students”. The problem of this research is the lifestyle of food, fun, and fashion (3f) has become a popular cultural phenomenon where activities of eat, entertainment, and fashion style are not literally interpreted but lead to display symbols of social and economic status. The method of research is descriptive qualitative. Data collecting technics are in-depth interviews, participant observation, and documentation. This research uses the lifestyle theory by Bourdieu and looking glass self-theory by Cooley. The result of this research is the lifestyle of food, fun, and fashion (3f) on Sriwijaya University Palembang Campus’s students shows the different variations determined from the differences in social and economic backgrounds which are the lower class, middle class, and upper class. (1) Lower-class students have described the lifestyle of food, fun, and, fashion (3f) by the habit of occasional eating at restaurants, cafes or fast-food restaurants, occasional entertainment activities carried out in outdoors with peer groups, and the fashion styles that often being used is the local brands. The lifestyle is carried out creates a self-image as someone who easies to get along with. The lifestyle of food, fun, and fashion (3f) is interpreted as a means to build good relationships with peer groups. (2) Middle-class students have described the lifestyle of food, fun, and fashion (3f) by routinely doing the activities such as eating and entertainment with peer groups, and in the fashion style using fashion products from the well-known brands and the local brands with some balanced composition. The lifestyle is carried out creates a self-image as someone who likes mingle. The lifestyle of food, fun, and fashion (3f) is interpreted as a means to become a modern person in appereance, and a means to adjust to the circle of friends. (3) Upper-class students have described the lifestyle of food, fun, and fashion (3f) by routinely eating at restaurants, cafés or fast-food restaurants with inner circles, routinely doing modern entertainment of the urban communities when leisure time, and accustomed to buying and using the branded fashion products to supporting their appearance. The lifestyle is carried out creates a self-image that is considered equal in a cicrle of friends. The lifestyle of food, fun, and fashion (3f) is interpreted as a means of increasing friendship, a means of building interactions with peer groups, and as a means to become modern about new things.
