Abstract

The purpose of this study was to analyze the social exchange of intercultural marriages of Arab descent with ethnic Palembang in Sungai Bayas Village, Palembang City. The theory used in this research is the Social Exchange theory of Jhon Thibaut and Harold Kelley. This research is a descriptive qualitative research type. This study focuses on the exchanges that occur in intercultural couples of Arab descent with ethnic Palembang, both before marriage, during the wedding ceremony, and after marriage. The results of this study indicate that the two pairs of informants experienced social exchange in almost the same conditions. From the results of this study, a social exchange pattern was formed in accordance with the theory used by the researcher, namely as follows, barrier-disposition-effective. So, Social Exchange in Intercultural Marriage of Arab Descent with Ethnic Palembang in Sungai Bayas Village, Palembang City is worth a good and effective relationship because the benefits received or the benefits are greater than the sacrifices or losses received.
