Abstract

Soil Transmitted Helminths (STH) is one of the Neglected Tropical Diseases (NTDs) groups that still do not get priority in a country, even though the incidence of infection is still there even there are some areas that are increasing. The incidence of STH infections must be controlled because it can spread among the poor and marginalized communities that have limited resources. Negative effects such as anemia, blindness, cognitive disorders and even death. We should be able to prevent this by knowing what factors influence the incidence of STH infections at the project site. The STH worm species found in this study were Ascaris lumbricoides (roundworms), and Trichuris trichiuria (whipworms). The study entitled Epidemiology Study of Transmitted Helminths (STH) Soil Infection in school children of SD/MI in Gandus District in 2019 aimed at analyzing the relationship between host, agent and environment factors on STH infection in school children of SD/MI in Gandus District, Palembang City. The method used was cross sectional with the instruments used were interviews and examination of the Kato Katz worm eggs & Harada Mori modification. The study was conducted in August until September 2019. The study population was school children of SD/MI in Gandus District, Palembang City and the number of samples in this study were 174 children school spread in 15 locations taken by the Proportional Multistage Cluster Random Sampling method. The results showed the proportion of STH infections by 23.56%, there was a relationship between the habits before serving fresh vegetables and eating habits outside the home with the incidence of STH infections with p value <0.05. The logistic regression test results showed that the dominant independent variables influencing the incidence of STH infection were habits before serving vegetables (OR = 2,343 CI = 0,990-5,543) and eating habits of eating vegetables outside the home (OR = 2,541 CI = 1,167-5,531). The need for health education on how to process vegetables and health education to traders who sell vegetables about clean and healthy behavior and administration of worm medicine to eradicate STH infections
