Abstract

The research by title effect of the differences hydrotermal extraction methods and calcination the characterization of silika from corn cob has been performed. Corncob is extracted by hydrothermal variation NaOH concentration methods 0.5;1.0; 1.5 and 2.0 M and calcination methods with temperature variations 600, 700 and 800oC, to obtain silica powder and on hydrothermal methods with NaOH concentration variations have yield value of 2-3.8% and on the calcination method have yield value at 2-3.31%. Next in characterization using XRD, FTIR and determining surface width using the Methylene blue method. The best XRD characterization results on the hydrothermal method is at NaOH 2.0 M because it shows an angle 2θ = 28.05o with amorphous phase and has a smaller particle size of 0.164 nm, while the best XRD results on the calcination method are 600oC because it shows an angle 2θ = 20.07o with a crystalline phase and has the smallest particle size of 1.464 nm. Best results from the next XRD in the characterization using FTIR. The FTIR results from both methods show a decrease in the specific function of silica, namely Si-O in the number of waves around 1000-500 cm-1 and Si-OH in the number of waves around 3500-1600 cm-1. The result of a surface determination using the methylene blue method, the largest surface area in the hydrothermal method is at NaOH 2.0 M, which is 13.704 m2/g, and the largest surface area in the calcination method is at 600oC, which is 12.704 m2/g. Based on the results of the comparisons of both methods that the silica obtained in the hydrothermal method has a greater yield value, and surface widths than the calcination method, in the hydrothermal method also has an amorphous phase while the calcination method has a crystalline phase. But the silica produced by the calcination method is whiter than the hydrothermal method.
