Abstract
Spodoptera frugiperda (J. E. Smith) is a new pest in maize in Indonesia. S. frugiperda is very detrimental because it attacks maize plants in the larval stage. S. frugiperda attacks maize plants in the vegetative and generative phases which can cause damage to maize plants and even death. Endophytic fungi reside in plant tissues which can potentially be entomopathogenic fungi, which are a type of pathogen that can infect insects through plants. Endophytic fungi have not been widely used as entomopathogenic fungi that can be used for pest control. Therefore, this study aimed to identify the morphology of the endophytic fungi explored from the growing points of maize, banana and vegetables from the low and highlands of South Sumatra and to test the pathogenicity of the endophytic fungi isolates explored on S. frugiperda larvae. This research was conducted at the Entomology Laboratory, Plant Protection Study Program, Department of Plant Pests and Diseases, Faculty of Agriculture, Sriwijaya University from April 2020-November 2020. This research used exploration methods and survey methods from the low and highlands of South Sumatra, namely Ogan Ilir. Pagar Alam, Prabumulih, Muara Enim, Lahat and Banyuasin. The pathogenicity test used a completely randomized design (CRD) using 7 treatments that were repeated 3 times and observed for 12 days. The results showed that 6 endophytic fungi isolates were found only in Ogan Ilir, Pagar Alam, Prabumulih and Banyuasin. Macroscopically, endophytic fungal isolates have colony characteristics in different colors, grow spread out and evenly. The endophytic fungi isolates with pathogenicity in controlling S. frugiperda were JaSpkPGA isolates with mortality reaching 32.00% and LT50 and LT95 the shortest namely 14.38 days and 26.74 days. Symptoms that arise after application on the 2nd to the 12th day are some S. frugiperda infected with fungi which have the characteristic of stiff death and there are larvae that grow hyphae all over their body surface and there are also larvae that are not overgrown by hyphae. The conclusion of this study was the discovery of 6 endophytic fungi isolates. The growing points for maize, banana and vegetables from the low and highlands of South Sumatra were: GaTpeOI, JaSpkPGA, JaGiPRB, JaMsBYS, JaBuBYS, and CaCjPGA. The endophytic fungi isolates with pathogenicity in controlling S. frugiperda were JaSpkPGA isolates with mortality reaching 32.00% and LT50 and LT95 the shortest namely 14.38 days and 26.74 days. Keywords: endophytic fungi, entomopathogenic fungi, Spodoptera frugiperda
