Abstract

Down syndrome (DS) is genetic developmental disorder caused by triplication of human chromosome 21 (trisomy 21) which results in multiple lifelong health problems. The rising of DS population causes public perceptions and behaviors to be critical in achieving their welfare. Providing an understanding of Down Syndrome is a medical personnel obligation, so that medical students as prospective medical personnel need to have adequate knowledge and a positive attitude towards DS. This is a descriptive observational study with a cross sectional research design that aims to identify the knowledge and attitudes of students towards Downs Syndrome. The samples of this research were students of PSPD FK UNSRI who fill the inclusion criteria with the total sampling technique. The knowledge and Attitude Questionnaire towards Down Syndrome (Alhaddad et al., 2018) was the instrument of this research. The results showed that the students had adequate knowledge (96.7%) and positive attitudes (92.7%) towards SD. Adequate knowledge and positive attitudes for male students were (97.2%) and (93%) and for female students (96.5%) and (92.6%). Knowledge and attitudes of students with a history of genetic disorders (97% adequate), (93.9% positive) and a history of interaction with DS (97.8% adequate), (94.9% positive) respectively. The conclusion of this study is PSPD FK UNSRI students have adequate knowledge and positive attitudes towards Down Syndrome . Keyword : Down Syndrome, stigmatization, knowledge, attitude
