Abstract

Diabetic retinopathy is a chronic, potentially vision-threatening, progressive disease of the retinal microvascularis associated with prolonged hyperglycemia and other conditions associated with diabetes mellitus such as hypertension. Diabetic retinopathy is the main cause of vision loss in type 1 DM patients and has many risk factors. This study aims to determine the incidence and risk factors for diabetic retinopathy. This study is an analytic observational study with cross sectional design that used medical record as secondary data at Eye Polyclinic Dr.Mohammad Hoesin Palembang. The sample consisted of 64 patients with total sampling technique. There were 50 patients who met the inclusion criteria. Most of the patients with diabetic retinopathy were found in the age group ≥40 years as many as 48 people (96%), male 25 people (50%), female 25 people (50%), duration of diabetes mellitus >5 years as many as 31 people (62%), hypertension as many as 45 people (90%), high total cholesterol as many as 15 people (30%). Diabetic retinopathy patients with the most PDR type with combination management (25%) and the most NPDR type with intravitreal injection management (16.3%). There was a significant relationship between HbA1C levels (p value = 0.050) with a PR=1.463 and total cholesterol (p value = 0.038) with a PR=1.667 on diabetic retinopathy. Age, sex, duration of diabetes mellitus, and blood pressure were not shown to have a statistical effect on diabetic retinopathy. The incidence of diabetic retinopathy is 0.41%. HbA1C levels and total cholesterol are significant risk factors for diabetic retinopathy.Diabetic retinopathy, risk factors, management of diabetic retinopathy
