Abstract

Background: A dyspepsia is a group of symptoms that are like upper gastrointestinal discomfort that is felt for a certain time. The prevalence of dyspepsia globally is around 20% -40% of cases. Dyspepsia is more common in college students because of high activity, which results in irregular eating patterns. The purpose of this study was to see the relationship between eating regularity and irritative diets with dyspepsia in students of Medical Education Study Program Faculty of Medicine, Sriwijaya University. Method: This study was an observational analytic study with a cross-sectional design. This research was conducted at the Faculty of Medicine, Sriwijaya University, Palembang, Indonesia. Data were collected through a google form questionnaire and then analyzed using the chi-square test. Results: The results of the univariate analysis showed that the largest number of respondents were female respondents, amounting to 66.7%. In this study, it was found that 24.5% of students with irregular eating patterns, 12.2% of students with irritating eating patterns, and 68% of students had dyspepsia. The results of the bivariate analysis showed that there was a significant relationship between eating regularity and dyspepsia (p = 0.039) and there was no significant relationship between an irritating diet and dyspepsia (p=0.079).
