Abstract

Background: Psoriasis is chronic and reccurent inflammatory skin disease, characterized by erythema plaque lesions coated with silvery white, and demarcated of various sizes. The prevalence of psoriasis in Indonesia reaches 2,5% of the population. Plaque psoriasis or known as psoriasis vulgaris, is the most common type and reaches 90% of all psoriasis cases. There is a hypothesis that obesity is an independent risk factor associated with a higher incidence of psoriasis. Therefore, research is needed on relationship between body mass index (BMI) and the severity of psoriasis vulgaris. Objective: To analyze the relationship between BMI and the severity of psoriasis vulgaris, and find out the distribution of sex, age, BMI, and severity of psoriasis vulgaris patients at RSMH Palembang. Method: This study was an observasional analytic study with design of cross-sectional. The population and sample of this study were all of psoriasis vulgaris patients at Dermatology and Venereology Outpatient of RSMH Palembang from January 1st, 2017 to December 31st, 2019. The severity of psoriasis vulgaris was measured by the Psoriasis Area and Severity Index (PASI) instrument and BMI was measured using the existing BMI formula. The data will be analyzed using IBM statistic 25 through Chi-square test with Confident Interval (CI) 95% or equal to 0,05. Result: There are 15 patients of severe psoriasis vulgaris, with 9 patients (39,1%) among them in BMI category of overweight/obesity. Based on Chi-Square test, the p value >0,05 (p=0,345) was obtained. Conclusion: There was no statistically significant relationship between BMI and the severity of psoriasis vulgaris in RSMH Palembang. Keywords: Body mass index, psoriasis, severity
