Abstract

Background: Suicide is one of the public health problems that grabs the world's attention. Globally, there are about 800,000 deaths due to suicide each year; about a third that occurs at young age. The most preferred method of suicide was hanging, which scores approximately 60.9%. In forensic medicine, death due to asphyxia is the most common cases that can be found after cases of direct injury and mechanical trauma. This study aims to describe asphyxia signs foung at Visum et Repertum of death by hanging cases at Rumah Sakit Bhayangkara Tingkat III Palembang in 2018–2020. Methods: This research is a descriptive study with a cross-sectional design approach. The research was conducted at Instalasi Kedokteran Forensik Yandokpol Rumah Sakit Bhayangkara Tingkat III Palembang. The research subjects were secondary data from the medical record of Visum et Repertum of death by hanging cases in 2018– 2020 that had met the inclusion and exclusion criterias. Results: The death rate of hanging cases in 2018 was 9.1%, in 2019 it was 72.7%, and in 2020 it was 18.2%. The distribution of sample characteristics based on gender was found to be male by 90.9% and female by 9.1%. The distribution of sample characteristics based on age group ≤ 23 years old, 24–49 years old, and ≥ 50 years old is 9.1%, 90.9%, and 0% respectively. The characteristic distributions of classic signs of asphyxia such as tardieu’s spots, congestion, oedema, cyanosis, and abnormal fluidity of the blood were 35.5%, 35.5%, 0%, 29%, and 0%, respectively. Conclusion: Based on the results and discussion of the study of 11 deaths by hanging shows that men and the 24–49 years (productive age) group are the groups where the most cases of death by hanging were found. The classic signs of asphyxia most often found in these cases were tardieu’s spot (35.5%), congestion (35.5%), and cyanosis (29%). Keywords: asphyxia, classic signs of asphyxia, hanging
