Abstract

This research aims to obtain an overview of students' numeracy skills based on cognitive reasoning aspects using problem based learning. This research uses descriptive research with the research subject is students of class VIII at SMP Negeri 51 Palembang. The learning process in the class was carried out by the problem based learning model. Data collection techniques used in this study were tests on TIMSS-like questions with the domain of reasoning, questionnaires to determine student responses during learning related to numeracy skills, and interviews to confirm answers to student test results. Based on the results of learning and tests conducted, the numeracy abilities of class VIII students of SMP Negeri 51 Palembang in the cognitive aspect of reasoning were in the good category with an average score of 61,3. The student achievement in the cognitive aspect indicator of reasoning was 77.8% for the analyze indicator, 61.1% for the integrate indicator, 50.0% for the draw conclusion indicator, 55.6% for the evaluate indicator, 44.4% for the justify indicator, and 33.3% for generalize indicators. Besides that, students also found mistakes in determining the procedures used, because students were still not familiar with contextual problems.
