Abstract

Fabrication and characterization of Pt/C and Pt-Ru/C electrodes for the conversion of carbon dioxide to methanol have been carried out. The electrodes were characterized using X-Ray Diffraction (XRD), Cyclic Voltammetry (CV) and Electrochemical Impedance Spectroscopy (EIS). XRD analysis results shows the diffractogram of the electrode with a Pt/C catalyst obtained at 2θ = 39.7⁰ shows characteristic peak of platina. In addition, the 2θ = 26.34⁰ peak shows presence a carbon. At the Pt-Ru/C electrode the diffractogram shows the presence of Ru at 2θ = 47.02⁰ and the platinum diffractogram at 2θ = 26.734⁰. The results of the analysis using the CV method obtained the highest ECSA value on the electrode with Pt-Ru/C catalyst with a catalyst loading of 2 mg/cm2 of 100.61 cm2/g. Meanwhile the measurement of EIS obtained a high conductivity value for Pt-Ru/C catalyst with 2 catalyst loading mg/cm2 of 0.123x10-2 S/cm. The results of the conversion of carbon dioxide to methanol get high yields on Pt-Ru/C catalyst in the cathode and Pt/C at the anode, with catalyst loading of 2 mg/cm2 and flow rate of 100 mL/minute at a voltage of 2 V is 4.10% w/w.
