Abstract

This research aims to develop natural dyes from mangosteen rind extract to color plant tissue and to find the best concentration that can color the plant tissue on the stems. The method used in this research is descriptive. Research procedure for making natural dyes by making mangosteen rind extract dissolved with 14% citric acid. Simple preparations were made using the paraffin-free method on monocot and dicot stems with a transverse incision type. The results showed that the alternative dye from mangosteen rind extract with various concentrations was able to color the plant tissue on monocot and dicot stems with various criteria. The concentrations that can color the monocot stem tissue with very good criteria are 90% and 100%. Meanwhile, concentrations of 70% and 80% can color plant tissue with good criteria. The concentrations that can color the dicot stem tissue with very good criteria are 90% and 100%. Meanwhile, concentrations of 30%, 40%, 50%, 60%, 70% and 80% can color plant tissue with good criteria. Key words: mangosteen rind, Garcinia mangostana L., alternative dyes, plant tissue.
