Abstract

ABSTRACK: Sumatra geological region is dominated by Tertiary volcanic arc that formed above the Pre-Tertiary basement. The traces of Mesozoic subduction zones on Sumatra was marked by the Jura-Cretaceous stratigraphic units in the Garba mountain. Furthermore, the subduction complex rock groups in the Garba mountain can be separated into rock groups derived from continental plates and oceanic plates; partly of it was being metamorphosed basement as found in the Cretaceous Tarap Formation - Early Perm in Tanjung Kurung Village. The aims of the research by means to determine the protolith of the basement arrangement in the Tarap Formation that is located West of The Garba Mountains. Amounts of 8 rock samples have been taken and selected for petrological and petrographic analysis. Preliminary data from petrological and petrographic results indicate that the Tarap Formation rock unit is a schist with foliation-lepidoblastic structure, phyllite shows the foliation-nemotoblastic structure, that was found along The Saka-Gilas River. The metamorphic rock unit in the Tarap Formation is the result of low-level regional metamorphism of sedimentary rocks in the form of mudstone that consist of mica, quartz and a small amount of fine-sized pyrite as protoliths of phyllite and schist.
