Abstract

Background: Tuberculosis (TB) is an infectious disease of the lung caused by Mycobacterium tuberculosis. TB can be transmitted from one individual to another through air droplets. The error in diagnosis is caused by a low sensitivity check method such as Ziehl Neelsen staining. The purpose of this study was to identify Mycobacterium tuberculosis from sputum specimens with positive smear results. Methods: This was an observational descriptive study with a laboratory design study to identify Mycobacterium tuberculosis. In this study, as many as 20 samples of positive BTA were isolated from patients suspected pulmonary tuberculosis examined in the clinical microbiology laboratory of dr. Moh. Hoesin Palembang by using multiplex PCR technique. The presence of Mycobacterium tuberculosis was confirmed by examination of the IS6110 gene. Results: The results of this study were 75% of the identified samples of IS6110 gene as Mycobacterium tuberculosis and 25% were Mycobacterium nontuberculosis Conclusion: In this research, 75% of Mycobacterium tuberculosis species have been found by examination of IS6110 gene from sputum specimen with positive smear result.
