Abstract

Background: The ability to think, rationalize, remember, assess, pay attention, perception and learning process is also called cognitive function. By improving cognitive function we are improving our ability to process and organize information to be better. There are many ways to improve cognitive function, one of them are through functional foods. Centella asiatica is a plant which has many benefits, one of them is for neurodegenerative disease. Several studies suggest that centella asiatica extract has a potential as a cognitive enhancer for healthy individuals. The purpose of this study was to determine the efficacy of centella asiatica in improving cognitive function of healthy wistar rats. Method: This is an experimental analytic study with pre- and post-test group design. The population of this study was wistar rats (Rattus norvegicus). The samples in this study were male healthy wistar rats, age 2-3 months, and weighing 200-300 grams. Data were taken using the Novel Object Recognition (NOR) test. The data were processed using Shapiro-Wilk, Levene's Test, One-Way ANOVA, Paired t-Test, and Independent t-Test tests, then presented in the form of narration and table. Result: Paired t-Test results showed that there was no significant difference between pre-test preference index and post-test preference index values (p>0.05) and between treatment groups at preference index post-test on Independent t-Test. Conclusion: Centella asiatica water extract is not effective in improving cognitive function of healthy wistar rats.
