Abstract

Background: One of the most common health problems in elderly people is hypertension, where the prevalence ratio of elderly people affected by hypertension is more than 50% and make it as the most disease in elderly. The high incidence of hypertension in Indonesia elderly can cause problems in elderly patients, such as organ disorders and emotional disorders. These problems can make people with hypertension prone to be depression. The elderly population in Indonesia who suffered from depressive disorder in 2010 as much as 5%, the number is getting bigger until 13,5% with medical disorder. Detection of depression in the elderly uses a scale called Geriatric Depression Scale (GDS). Method: The type of research used is correlation analysis. The sample of the study was conducted in elderly patients in the Internal Medicine Polyclinic of Dr. Mohammad Hoesin Palembang period October 2017-December 2017. Sampling was done by non-probability sampling using consecutive sampling technique, the samples that had been obtained will be analyzed using SPSS (Statistical Product and Service Solutions) program according to the variables studied. Result: Based on the results of the study of 32 elderly patients with hypertension obtained 68.75% most likely to experience depression. Kendall's tau-b correlation test shows the value p = 0.003 with a large correlation is 0,504, a significant relation with moderate correlation strength. Conclusion: There is a significant correlation with moderate correlation strength between hypertension and depression in elderly patients
