Abstract
Betel quid chewing is an common practice in 10-20% population in the world. Betel quid chewing practice is made up of betel leaf, areca nut, gambier and slaked lime. The previous research reported that all ingredients have an antibacterial effect. This study aimed to determine the effect of betel quid extract as an antiseptic on lip mucosal wound of male wistar rats. This experimental laboratory used pretest-posttest only control group design. Thirty Wistar rats were divided into five groups, group 1, 2 and 3 were given betel quid ointment 5%, 10% and 20%, group 4 was given hyaluronic acid 0,2% (Gengigel®) and group 5 was given placebo ointment. Labial mucosal wound of lip lower rats were induced by cylinder diamond bur than were swabbed before and after smeared the mucosa by material research. Swab samples were cultured in agar medium, and then incubated for 24 hours. The number of bacterial colonies were counted by colony counter and expressed in CFU/ml. The data was analyzed by paired T- test and one way ANOVA statistical analysis. The result showed that number of bacterial colonies from all groups decreased significantly after the treatment (p<0,05), except the number of bacterial colonies from the negative control group that were increased after the treatment. The number of bacterial colonies from 20% kinang exract were lower than 5% and 10% kinang extract, but no significant difference compared with hyaluronic acid 0,2%. It can be concluded that 20% kinang extract had greatest antiseptic effect on lip mucosal wound of male wistar rats and it had the same effect with hyaluronic acid 0,2%.
