Abstract
High product quality is usually related to the demand for a product that has a high level of accuracy and good manufacturing processes, especially in the fastgrowing aerospace industry which commonly use products made of titanium alloy. To achieve that level of quality is difficult because titanium alloy materials are very expensive. Furthermore, it is also hard in nature. This research aims to identify the optimum machining conditions for obtaining surface roughness that meets the needs of the industry and the performance of straight carbide used in CNC end milling of Ti6Al4V thin wall using surface response methodology. The design of factorial experiment employed response surface methodology (RSM) in developing an empirical mathematical model for estimating the surface roughness with the parameters of cutting speed 80 ≤ Vc ≤ 125 m/min, feed per tooth 0.04 ≤ fz ≤ 0.1 mm/tooth, axial depth of cut 0.25 ≤ arad ≤ 0.2 mm and radial depth of cut 5 ≤ aax≤ 10 mm on the dry-cutting conditions. ANOVA was used to verify the models. The results indicate that cutting speed, feed per tooth, axial depth of cutting and radial depth of cut are key factors which determine the surface roughness in the end milling of Ti6Al4V thin wall.
