Abstract

This study aims to examine the relationship between self esteem with culture shock on students from Papua at Sriwijaya University and Sriwijaya State Polytechnic. The hypothesis in this study was there is a relationship between self esteem with culture shock on students from Papua at Sriwijaya University and State Polytechnic of Sriwijaya. The population in this study amounted to 65 people. The sampling technique used in this research is hypothesis in this study is acceptable. Saturated sampling technique, so the entire population is sampled as many as 65 people. Then the researchers also conducted data retrieval testing on strudent from Papua in Sumatera with a subject as many as 50 people. The data collection techniques in this study using a modified self esteem scale from Rosenberg (1965) and a modified culture shock scale from D.B Mumford (1997). While the analysis technique in this research is Spearman Rank test. The results of this study indicate that self esteem has a relationship with culture shock. The significance value obtained is 0.023 (p <0.05), whereas the correlation value obtained is -0.228. Based on the results of the analysis that has been done, it can be concluded that there is a significant and negative relationship between self esteem with culture shock on students from Papua at Sriwijaya University and Sriwijaya State Polytechnic. Thus the hypotheis in this study is acceptable.
