Abstract

Background: Ulcers are the most common lesions found on the oral mucosa. One of the herbal medicines that can be used for ulcer therapy is pineapple peel, because it contains flavonoid, saponin, tannin, and bromelain which have been known could help the healing process. This study was to determine the effect of pineapple peel extract gel against the healing of oral mucosal ulcers in wistar strain rats. Methods: A true experimental study in vivo with a pretest-posttest with control group design was carried out on 30 wistar strain rats, that were divided into 3 groups consist of 20% pineapple peel ethanol extract gel, 0.2% chlorhexidine gel as positive control and placebo gel as negative control. The ulcers were induced at the lower lip labial mucosa of rats using heated ball burnisher. The topical agents were applied to the ulcers 3 times a day for 7 days. Diameter of ulcer was measured on day 0,3,5, and 7 using the probe UNC-15 (mm). Data were analyzed using SPSS with a significance value of p<0.05. Results: The results of this study showed that there was significant difference in ulcer diameter reduction after 3 days of treatment between 20% pineapple peel extract gel and placebo gel (p<0.05). There was no significant difference in ulcer diameter reduction after 3 days of treatment among other groups (p>0.05). Conclusion: Pineapple peel extract gel 20% could stimulate ulcer healing so it can be used as an alternative agents for ulcer treatment. Keywords: ulcer, pineapple peel, Ananas comosus L merr, Wistar strain rats.
