Abstract
Yam bean (Pachyrhizus erosus (l.) Urban) includes horticultural plants that have the potential of skin lightening because they contain flavonoid compounds and whitening agents that can inhibit melanin formation. The making of submicro particles of chitosan alginate carrying Yam bean starch using ionic gelation method aims to increase the speed of skin lightening effect due to excessive UV light on mice exposed to direct sunlight 30 minutes for 7 days. The XRD study showed changes in the alginate and chitosan particles in the form of crystals to be amorphous after being submicro particles. Optimum formula of particle submikro Chitosan alginat carrier of Yam bean starch yields the highest of 82.36% EE% ± 0.001. The results of submicro particle characterization such as diameter, particle size distribution (PDI), and zeta potential using a particle size analyzer (PSA) are 3071.148 nm; 0.403; and 4.1 mV. The treatment of skin lightening effect test was differentiated based on variations in submicro particle concentration used in making gel, 1% for F1, F2 for 2%, and 3% for the F3. In vivo skin lightening test results showed that the F3 brightened the skin faster than other treatments, (p < 0.05) which showed a significant difference between F3 with negative control and the positive control.
