Abstract

Rice husk as a biomass which is abundant high content of cellulose and hemicellulose can be used as a raw material for the manufactured of adsorbents. Hydrochar from rice husk were prepared using hydrothermal carbonization method with variations of time and temperature and activation process using NaOH as activator agent. The adsorbent preparation and activation results were applied in the adsorption process of malachite green and rhodamine-B dyes with pH, time, concentration and temperature variables followed by observations of several parameters such as kinetics, isotherm, and adsorption thermodynamics. The result of preparation and activation were characterized by XRD, FTIR, SEM, and BET surface area analysis. XRD analysis of rice husk, hydrochar and activated hydrochar showed a diffraction peak at angle of 23⁰. FTIR spectra showed the presence of functional groups like –OH, CH aliphatic, C≡C, C=C, C-C, and C-O. SEM analysis showed that rice husk has a particle which aggregation each other, hydrochar has an irregular morphology and refers to heterogeneous, while activated hydrochar has a particle with morphology more like needle shape. BET analysis showed an increase in the surface area of material due to the hydrothermal treatment at 250℃ from 6.094 m2/g to 39.783 m2/g and increase again to 62.858 m2/g after activation. The adsorption process of malachite green and rhodamine-B dyes by five adsorbents were optimum at pH 6 and pH 3. The adsorption kinetics data using the pseudo second order kinetics model was more suitable to explain the adsorption process of malachite green and rhodamine-B dyes. Langmuir equation more suitable for adsorption of malachite green dye while Freundlich equation more suitable for adsorption of rhodamine-B dye by five adsorbents. Negative value of ΔG indicated that adsorption process occurs spontaneously and ΔH is positive showed that adsorption process is endothermic and its assume that adsorption process occurs physically. Desorption data showed that desorption of malachite green and rhodamine-B dyes with rice husk adsorbent was more suitable using NaOH solvent, while hydrochar and activated hydrochar were more suitable using ethanol solvent. Activated hydrochar adsorbent was more stable to use in regeneration than rice husk and hydrochar. The adsorption selectivity showed that malachite green dye was more easier to adsorb than the rhodamine-B dye. The result of characterization study in adsorbent after adsorption malachite green and rhodamine-B dyes using XRD showed a shift in diffraction peak which indicated an interaction between the adsorbate and the adsorbent surface
