Abstract

The research of photocatalytic degradation of procion red MX-8B dyes using Fe3O4/SiO2/ZnO composites has been done. The Fe3O4/SiO2/ZnO composite was synthesized by the coprecipitation method with Fe3O4 as the composite core then coated with SiO2 and finally coated with ZnO. The application of Fe3O4/SiO2/ZnO synthesis was used to degrade procion red MX-8B dyes by UV light. Fe3O4/SiO2/ZnO composite were characterized using XRD, SEM-EDS, and VSM. The results of characterization using XRD, Fe3O4/SiO2/ZnO composite showed a sharp peak intensity at 2θ = 34.41° and had a crystal size of 51.87 nm. The SEM-EDS analysis results showed that the surface of the composite is porous and has irregular spheres with the composition elements of Fe (13.12%), Si (15.70%), O (30.35%), and Zn (22.99%). The results of VSM obtained the magnetization saturation value of composites Fe3O4/SiO2/ZnO was 48.13 emu/g. The optimum conditions of Fe3O4/SiO2/ZnO composites for degradation procion red MX-8B dyes occurred at 180 minutes contact time at pH 6, the optimum concentration procion red MX-8B dyes was 35 mg/L and the composite Fe3O4/SiO2/ZnO weight was 0.04 g with a degradation effectiveness of 75.889%.
