Abstract

The development of the industrial sector has recently grown in a rapid way, especially some companies which manage oil palm. With regards to the increase of oil palm plantations, the amount of palm oil production will increase. Therefore, the capacity of palm oil processing as well increases. This undoubtedly can cause problems that include some activities leading to a liquid waste from palm oil mills production. Once the liquid waste is not managed properly and correctly, this will cause environmental pollution. This study aimed to analyze the management of palm oil waste at PT Hindoli Mill Sungai Lilin. The research method employed was a qualitative approach. Data collection was carried out by in-depth interviews, observations, and document review. The results of the study showed that the principle applications of the clean production were elimination, reduction, and recyclation, but there were no reusage and recovery of the liquid waste. The processing of liquid waste in WWTP uses a waste pool system which requires 19 ponds. The quality of the liquid waste exhibited the presence of wastewater parameters which were still above the liquid waste quality standard regulated by the Governor of South Sumatra Regulation No. 8 of 2012; high levels of COD and BOD at the WWTP inlet, namely 949 mg/L and 250 mg/L. Otherwise, at the IPAL outlet, the TSS levels were high at 284 mg/L. Additionally, the results of the examination of pH on the inlet and outlet of WWTP also exceeded the specified quality standards, namely pH 9.14 and pH 9.25. Generally, liquid waste management at PT Hindoli Mill Sungai Lilin was overall good. However, the application of the clean production principle was not really optimal as the principle of clean production of reusage and recovery had not been applied yet.
