Abstract

Background: Coronary heart disease (CHD) is a heart disease that occurs due to narrowing of the coronary artery wall by the process of atherosclerosis. Factors that can increase the risk of atherosclerosis are high LDL levels and low blood HDL levels. One alternative choice for reducing blood LDL levels is by consuming unsaturated fatty acids derived from fish oil. Toman fish is a freshwater fish found in South Sumatra and has a higher unsaturated fatty acid content than saturated fatty acids. So from that this study was conducted to determine the effect of toman fish oil on LDL and HDL levels of blood. Method: This type of research was a laboratory experimental using a randomized pretest-posttest with control group design. The experimental animals used were male mice (Mus musculus) induced by hypercholesterol using high-fat feed. Then, mice were divided into 6 groups given different treatments, namely negative control, positive control, fish oil dose I(0.05g/30gBW), fish oil dose II(0.1g/30gBW), fish oil dosage III(0.2g/30gBW), and dose IV fish oil (0.4g/30gBW). Blood samples were examined using a spectrophotometer. Results: Toman fish oil at dose IV has an effect on decreasing blood LDL (P=0.004) and HDL (p=0.027) levels in mice significantly. While the dose II (p=0.046) and dose III (p=0.038) gave a significant of decreasing blood LDL levels, but it did not effect the HDL level of blood in mice (p>0.05). Conclusion: Toman fish oil can reduce blood LDL levels starting from a dose of 0.1g/30BW and reduce blood HDL levels starting from a dose of 0.4g/30gBW in male mice (Mus musculus).
