Abstract

Background. Hypertension is an increase in systolic blood pressure which reach about 140 mmHg or systolic blood pressure for at least 90 mmHg. Hypertension is a health condition that is happening all over the world with an increasing incidence everytime. Obesity, especially central obesity which is characterized by an increase in waist circumference is hypertension risk factor. Waist circumference measurement can give a picture about abdominal dangerous fat three times higher than body mass index (BMI). Method. This is an analytical observational study Penelitian ini adalah penelitian analitik observasional dengan pendekatan cross-sectional. Sample of study is adult hypertensive patient at Puskesmas Sako and Puskesmas Merdeka Palembang by 2018 period. Result. From 54 subjects, there are 38 female patient with significant correlation between waist circumference with systolic and diastolic blood pressure (p=0,000 and p=0,022, respectively) and 16 male patient with significant correlation between waist circumference and systolic blood pressure (p=0,000), on the other hand there are insignificant correlation between waist circumference and distolic blood pressure (p=0,060). Conclusion. There are correlation between waist circumference and systolic blood pressure for male and female hypertensive patient in addition to diastolic blood pressure for female patient. Meanwhile, there are no correlation between waist circumference and diastolic blood pressure in male hypertensive patient.
