Abstract

Sociology Department, Faculty of Social and Political Sciences, Sriwijaya University. This study examines the problems regarding Digital Democracy that occurred on Facebook social media, namely the Facebook group of South Sumatra chose the Legislature and the President in 2019. The theory used in this study was the Theory of Critical Discourse Analysis Teun A. Van Djik, the researcher used a qualitative research design through in-depth interviews, observation and documentation. Data are analyzed qualitatively, data analysis techniques used by researchers are data reduction stages, data presentation stages, and conclusion stages. The results of the study show that democracy through social media has been formed and is massive. This can be seen from the users of social media who are trying to improve the search and exchange of political information in the realm. In addition, digital democracy in this study also supports the formation of communities such as Facebook groups that support the two pairs of Presidential Candidates who will take part in the Presidential Election in 2019. Through social media, public debate often results in hatespace and hoax information. Social media users must be wiser in accepting and disseminating information through social media, as well as paying attention to the ethics of speaking to avoid war of status and utterance of hatred.
