Abstract

Background: Multidrug Resistant Organisms (MDRO) are organisms (bacteria) that acquired non-susceptibility to at least one agent in three or more antimicrobial categories. Most MDRO transmissions are recorded in GICU which is also a high-risk place for nosocomial infection. This research aims to determine the difference of Multidrug-Resistant Organisms incidence of GICU (General Intensive Care Unit) patients in 2015 and 2016. It can also be a guidance to the management of therapy in the effective use of antibiotics in Dr. Mohammad Hoesin Palembang Hospital. Method: This research is a descriptive study with cross-sectional design. Data were obtained from positive bacterial culture results through culture tests and antibiotic resistance tests for GICU patients at Installation of Clinical Pathology and Microbiological Dr. Mohammad Hoesin Palembang Hospital. Results: A total of 549 out of 611 samples (89,8%) had been identified as being MDRO in 2015 and a total of 490 out of 552 samples (88,7%) in 2016. In 2015, all Gram-positive (except S. viridians) and Gram-negative (except C. diversus) bacteria had been identified as being MDRO. While in 2016, all Gram-positive (except S. viridians) and Gram-negative bacteria had been identified as being MDRO. Conclusion: There is a difference of MDRO incidence in 2015 and 2016, which the incidence of MDRO in 2016 has decreased compared to 2015. In 2015 and 2016, bacterial infections of GICU patients are more frequently caused by Gram-negative bacteria.
