Abstract

Background: Obesity has become a common problem in the world community. Many ways that can be done to follow up, one of them by increasing physical activity Behavioral physical activity can be increased through counseling and motivation of physical activity. This study aims to determine the relationship of counseling and motivation of physical activity to the value of physical activity and body mass index. Method: Experimental research with pre-test and post-test control group design was conducted at SMAN 5 Palembang in October-November 2017. A total of 20 students were given counseling and motivation, 20 students were given motivation, 20 students were given counseling and 20 other students did not. Then do the counters weight and height. For 1 month the number of students' footsteps is calculated by using the Accupedo Pedometer application. One way annova and paired t-tests were performed using SPSS version 16. Result: From 80 subjects, the average physical activity score is 8110 ± 910 step / day. The mean value of IMT was averaged 19.186 ± 3.91 kg / m2 before treatment and 19.019 ± 4.06 kg / m2 after treatment in the counseling group and motivation. The mean value of IMT in the control group was 19,518 ± 6.47 kg / m2 before treatment and after treatment 19,758 ± 6,36. The results of statistical tests in this study obtained p value = 0.45 (p <0.05) and p = 0.00 (p <0.05). Conclusion: There is a significant influence on high school students given counseling and motivation on the number of foot steps and body mass index values. Further research is needed in different populations.
