Abstract
Pig iron industry needs a certain qualification of Fe grade. So iron sand needs processing to suit the mineral grade of iron. Ferrous metal grade in the processed iron sand concentrate must meet the Fe grade value of ≥56%. Processing is done to increase the grade of iron sand so the standard requirements of pig iron production is fulfilled. This study uses willobi as an iron sand processing tool. Willobi is a mineral processing tool which is used to increase the level of a mineral based on the principal of gravity concentration. Willobi separates the concentrate from tailings using water media that flows vertically so that materials with small density will be pushed and come out as tailings, while materials with large specific gravity will settle as concentrate. To optimize the performance of willobi, adjusting the variables on willobi can be done, such as varying the cross-sectional area of willobi, water discharge and feeding speed. In this study, an experiment was carried out by adjusting the water discharge and feeding speed. The variation of the water flow discharge are 20 L / minute, 25 L / minute, 30 L / minute, 35 L / minute and 40 L / minute. The variation of feeding speed are 1kg / 4 minutes, 1kg / 6 minutes, 1kg / 8 minutes, 1kg / 10 minutes dan 1kg / 12 minutes. Based on 25 experiments that have been done, there are 7 (seven) experiments which produce iron sand with ≥56% Fe grade. The resulting average value of losses is 0.08% from 1000 grams of 49.95% Fe graded feed. The most optimal recovery from the 25 experiments is on the seventh with the application of 35 L / minute water discharge and 1kg / 10 minutes feeding speed. The resulting content of the experiment was 56.08% with iron sand recovery of 90.14%.
