Abstract

Background: based on Indonesia data basic Health Research (RISKESDAS) in 2018 73,4% of children aged 7-14 years in Indonesian have experienced dental caries. Efforts to reduce the risk of caries by reducing the intake of sucrose sugar which can be fermented by S. mutans bacteria with unfermented sugar substitutes such as xylitol. Xylitol is used in sugar-free sweeteners such as chewing gum which has benefits that are good for oral health. Parents' knowledge and education influence the formation of children's behavior and attitudes. One of the efforts to improve dental and oral health knowledge is through health education such as educational videos. Aims: To compare the parental knowledge before and after being given an educational videos about chewing gum xylitol. Methods: This research used quasi-experimental with pretest-posttest design and simple-random sampling technique. The research subjects were 50 parents at SDN 157 Palembang. Samples was given a questionnaire before (pretest) and after (posttest) an educational videos was given. The data analysis used in this study was the Wilcoxon test. Results: There was a significance difference between pretest and posttest scores of parents’ knowledge before and after being given an educational videos (p-value <0.0001). Conclusion: There was an increase in parental knowledge at SDN 157 Palembang about chewing gum xylitol after being given an educational videos.
