Abstract

Introduction: Dental caries is an infectious disease caused by a progressive demineralization process in the hard tissue of the teeth. The factors involved in dental caries process are host, substrate, time, and cariogenic microorganisms on plaque. The bacteria play a role in the early stages of plaque formation is Streptococcus sanguinis. Miana leaf is a plant that was reported to have antibacterial effects because it contained compounds such as flavonoids, tannins, alkaloids, saponins. Objective: The aim of this study was to determine the effectiveness of miana leaf (Coleus scutellarioides L. Benth) extract against bacterial growth of Streptococcus sanguinis. Materials and Methods: The material used in this study is miana leaves. This study was an experimental laboratory in vitro with a post test only control group design. The treatment group used miana leaf extract with concentration 5%, 10%, 15%, 20% dan chlorhexidine 0,2% as a positive control. The inhibition zone test used the disc diffusion method and minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) test and minimum bactericidal concentration (MBC) used the dillution method. Result: MIC couldn’t be determined because it was blocked by the color of the extract and the MBC obtained at concentration 10%. The average of inhibition zone produced by miana leaf extract against Streptococcus sanguinis growth at concentration of 5% was 3,25±0,22 mm, 10% was 5,54±0,18 mm, 15% was 8,21±0,29, and the concentration with the greatest inhibition was 20% at 10,54±0,18 mm. Conclusion: Miana leaf (Coleus scutellarioides L. Benth) extract has an antibacterial effect against bacterial growth of Streptococcus sanguinist strart from concentration of 5%. Keywords: antibacterial, miana leaves, Streptococcus sanguinis
