Abstract
This research discuss about effect of the addition of burnable poison on the fuel that is protactinium thorium-uranium-based combined for BWR longevity with thermal power 500MWt. The fuel in this study consisted of ThO2 combined with 1.8-3% enrichment UO2. To achieve excess reactivity <10% at the beginning of life, the addition of Pa-231 materials is 1-5%. Selection of protactinium in this study because Protactinium-231 has the ability to absorb strong thermal neutrons. On the other hand Pa-231 can compensate for fissile isotopes at the next burnup step. In the addition of Pa-231 as much as 3%, the value of excess reactivity at the beginning of burning <10% was 9.65. Refueling period were achieved just three years, to extend the refueling needs to be improved by adding a combination of thorium fuel with other fuels such as plutonium that longer periods of refueling.
