Abstract

Background: Orthodontic treatment can improve the condition of deviated tooth alignment, however when doing orthodontic treatment there are unwanted side effects and can affect the impact on quality of life. The quality of life for each individual will differ depending on how the individual defines and describes it. The aims of this study was to determine whether there are differences in the quality of life of male and female students of Sriwijaya University during orthodontic treatment. Method: This study was an analytic survey method with a cross sectional approach. This study involved 50 subjects. The study subject consisted of a group of male students (n=25) and female students (n=25) Medical Faculty of Sriwijaya University. The difference in quality of life was measured using the OHIP-14 questionnaire method online via google form. The questionnaire contains 14 questions and includes photos of the condition of the teeth and mouth. Data were analyzed using the Mann-Whitney test. Results: The results obtained showed that the quality of life of female students was lower than male students during orthodontic treatment. Significant differences were found in the dimensions of physical pain (p<0,001), psychological disability (p<0,05) and social limitations(p<0,05). Conclusion: Male and female students of Sriwijaya University have differences in the quality of life during orthodontic treatment.
